There’s always something
going on
Whether centuries-old customs, folk festivals or lively markets: in the Upper Venosta Valley, there are many events throughout the year that allow you to get to know the region from its most authentic side. Try regional specialities, immerse yourself in the past and celebrate and dance until dawn.
Cattle drive
Summer draws to a close when cows and sheep decorated with lavish flower wreaths make their way down from the mountain pastures to the valley. The traditional cattle drive is accompanied by a lively atmosphere, folk music and South Tyrolean specialities. Here, tradition becomes a living celebration.
“Scheibenschlagen”
During this ancient ritual in the Upper Venosta Valley, wooden discs are heated in an open fire during the first Sunday of Lent and then thrown down towards the valley using a special technique. At the end of the evening, a cross made of straw and wood several metres high is also burned. Look forward to a mystical night!
Sacred Heart of Jesus Fire
On the third Sunday after Pentecost, the peaks of South Tyrol are set ablaze. Young and old alike climb high into the mountains and light the so-called Sacred Heart of Jesus fires, which can be seen clearly even from a great distance. Shaped like crosses, hearts or the Tyrolean eagle, they shine like luminous paintings in the night sky.
Krampus run
At the beginning of December, scary figures with rattling chains fill the streets of the Upper Venosta Valley. They wear intricately carved masks and costumes made of shaggy fur. The Krampus runs are among the most exciting pre-Christmas customs in South Tyrol. An unmissable experience for anyone looking for a thrill.
South Tyrolean Knights’ Festival
At the end of August, everything in Sluderno is devoted to the Middle Ages. For one weekend, the field next to the village is transformed into a huge tent city. Mingle with the jugglers, cheer on the knights as they battle, and feel the heat as fire-eaters light up the night.
Markets
Trade and haggling have always been part of life at the three-country corner in the Venosta Valley. Even today, farmers' markets and weekly markets are held here throughout the year. Sample regional specialities, breathe in the scent of colourful flowers and take home a small piece of handicraft as a souvenir.
